Do more than count carbs. Prevent diabetes!
In light of November being National Diabetes Awareness Month, we aim to make you not only more aware but more in control. As of 2020, the CDC reports an astonishing 10.5% of the population has diabetes. Approximately 1 in 3 people are prediabetic. The good news is that type 2 diabetes can be prevented and even reversed with the right habits. That is why we are here!
The American Diabetes Association explains that “diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood sugar (also called blood glucose) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia.
When you eat, your body breaks food down into sugar and sends it into the blood. Insulin then helps move the sugar from the blood into your cells. When sugar enters your cells, it is either used as fuel for energy right away or stored for later use. In a person with diabetes, there is a problem with insulin. But, not everyone with diabetes has the same problem.
There are different types of diabetes—type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. If you have diabetes—type 1, type 2 or gestational—your body either doesn't make enough insulin, can't use the insulin well, or both.”
Maintaining control of your blood sugar is obviously crucial to managing and even preventing diabetes, but it is also essential for overall health. Watch this video for 7 simple steps from Zemi on how to control your blood sugar. You may be surprised that counting carbs is not one of them!
